Heading into the offseason, the New York Giants have quite a few star players that are entering free agency and will need new contracts if they’re going to remain with the team. The two most prominent of those players are quarterback Daniel Jones and running back Saquon Barkley, and it’s going to be tough for the Giants to keep both on their roster next year.

While the Giants initially hoped to sign Daniel Jones to an extension this season, it’s looking like the team will need to use the franchise tag on him instead. If that happens, that means the team would need to sign Barkley to a new contract if they want to keep him around, as each team only has one franchise tag to use each year.

“The big winner in that move could be running back Saquon Barkley,” NFL insider Mike Florio wrote on Pro Football Talk Monday morning. “The Giants, like all teams, have one tag to use each year. The thinking was that the Giants would sign Jones to a long-term deal and then tag Barkley, if they can’t work out a deal with him, too. Now, the focus will likely shift to getting Barkley signed.”

One way or another, it’s clear that if both Barkley and Jones are going to remain with the team next year, one of them is going to have to sign a new deal.
