On Sunday, the New York Giants opened their first season of the post-Daniel Jones era. This offseason, the Giants added three quarterbacks: veterans Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston, as well as rookie Jaxson Dart, whom New York selected in the first round of the 2025 NFL draft.

Giants head coach Brian Daboll named Russell Wilson the starter heading into the Giants’ week one contest against the Washington Commanders.

Although Dart was extremely impressive in the preseason, Daboll stuck with Wilson as the starter, and Dart made it clear that he is willing to wait for his first opportunity to take the field.

“I feel like whenever my number is called, I’m gonna go out there, I’m gonna play my game and I’m gonna ball,” Dart said.

“That’s just my mindset any time I touch the field. Obviously, Russ is the starter, and he’s going to do amazing. He’s had such a great camp and has played at an elite level. My job is just to be the best teammate and be ready whenever it is. I’m excited for Russ and what he’s going to do this year.”

However, Dart expressed confidence in himself for when he finally gets to see the field.

“When I step on the field, I expect to play at a high level. I have the confidence that I’m going to be the best player on the field every time.”

Now, it appears that opportunity may come sooner than Dart anticipated.

After the Giants’ 21-6 loss on Sunday, Daboll wouldn’t commit to Wilson being the starting quarterback next week.

“We’re going to get home and look at our game,” Daboll said after being asked if he’d think about starting Dart next week, according to ESPN.

Fans reacted to the news on social media.

“Gots to go. He was terrible and obviously past his prime. Should’ve never gotten rid of Tommy Cutlets,” one fan wrote on Twitter about Wilson.

“I will say, Jaxson Dart has to start, like Sanders has to start for the Browns,” another fan added.

“Absurd he didn’t put him in today. Russ is more washed than my current load of laundry,” someone else added.

It’ll be interesting to see if Dart is named the starter this week.
