ESPN is reporting that Denver Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak has reportedly reached out to embattled quarterback Johnny Manziel about the club’s quarterback opening.
The Broncos have been searching for a new starting quarterback since Peyton Manning retired and Brock Osweiler took big money to start with the Texans. Denver has been linked to San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick but haven’t managed to strike a deal.
Manziel would make for an interesting gamble. The Broncos passing game is due for a much-needed change but it’s unknown whether Manziel would represent an upgrade. Manziel made nine appearances with the Browns in 2015 throwing 1,500 yards, seven touchdowns and five interceptions with a 57.8 percent completion rate.
The 23-year-old would come with plenty of baggage. Manziel’s got pending charges against him for domestic violence and noted issues with alcohol abuse. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports the Broncos would wait for his legal issues and possible NFL suspension to be resolved before signing him.
Mike Klis of 9News reports the Broncos currently have no plans to sign Manziel, which was confirmed by Ian Rapoport of NFL.com, who said Kubiak reached out a month ago. So if the Broncos do have interest, don’t expect a signing anytime soon.
The Broncos acquired Mark Sanchez from the Philadelphia Eagles earlier this offseason so there isn’t an immediate need for a QB, although an upgrade would help. Kubiak told ESPN ‘[The Broncos] need to stay focused on the guys on our team right now.”
