Former NFL quarterback Bubby Brister’s 21-year-old son was arrested Wednesday for a fatal hit-and-run accident that occurred last weekend.
According to the New York Post, Walter Andrew Brister IV surrendered to Baton Rouge, La., police Wednesday. He has been booked on a charge of felony hit-and-run for the incident, which happened near the LSU campus late Saturday.
Jude Jarreau, 44, was struck and killed by a black Range Rover SUV as he attempted to cross a street. The vehicle allegedly left the scene.
John McLindon, Brister’s attorney, told WBRZ.com that Wednesday was the most suitable time for Brister to surrender.
“Sunday morning, when Mr. Brister realized he had been involved in this accident, he immediately called his parents. They called an attorney, who referred them to me,” McLindon said. “So by Sunday afternoon I was on the phone with Hillar Moore (East Baton Rouge district attorney). I told them that I represent Brister and he was going to self-surrender.
“Monday was a legal holiday, and the first time available that all parties including myself, the police officers … The first time we could do it was Wednesday morning.”
The younger Brister played college football briefly at Northern Colorado in 2020, but left the team. He joined Louisiana Tech this season, but is not currently listed on the team’s roster.
Bubby Brister played 14 seasons in the NFL, but he’s best known for his time with the Pittsburgh Steelers from 1986-1992. He posted a 28-29 mark as a starter with Pittsburgh.
He also had stints with the Philadelphia Eagles, New York Jets, Denver Broncos and Minnesota Vikings. He was a member of two Super Bowl-winning teams backing up John Elway with the Broncos in 1997-1998.
For his career, Brister threw for 14,445 yards, with 81 touchdowns and 78 interceptions.
