The Philadelphia Eagles snapped their three-game losing streak on Monday against the New York Giants. But one Eagles star is still not satisfied with how the team performed on the field.
Philadelphia came into the game as near two-touchdown favorites over their NFC East rivals in New York. And the game played out far closer on the field than it probably should have when you look at how each team has played this year.
The Eagles were able to pull it out at the end of the game thanks to an interception of Giants quarterback Tyrod Taylor as time expired from rookie cornerback Kelee Ringo.
It’s obviously great to come away with the win. That’s the name of the game in the NFL.
That being said, it is clear that this Eagles team still needs to put in some more work to round back into their midseason form before the start of the playoffs if they are going to be true Super Bowl contenders in the NFC.
Eagles star wide receiver Devonta Smith said as much after the game on Monday, offering a critical analysis of his team in his post-game press conference.
“Eleven wins?” Smith said via NBC Sports Philadelphia. “We’re not playing good football right now. As an offense, we’re not where we want to be. I’m not satisfied. Yeah, we got 11 wins. I’m not happy. It needs to be better for what I want to do, what everybody else in here wants to do, what we want to be. We’re nowhere near that, so no, I’m not happy.”
It may be a harsh critique from Smith after a win. But it is the correct mindset for a team looking to return to the Super Bowl like they did last season, and hopefully finish the job this time around if they do indeed get there.
A close victory against a pretty below-average team like the Giants certainly isn’t going to impress other teams around the league. They will look to get a far-more convincing victory in Week 17 against the Arizona Cardinals.
