The football world mourned the passing of Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Dwayne Haskins in April after he was hit by a truck on a highway in Florida. While many of his Ohio State alums and NFL teammates shared touching tributes, the details surrounding what happened remained fairly unknown for some time.
We later learned from a 911 call by Haskins’ wife, Kalabrya, that Haskins told her he was stranded on the side of the road and was walking to get gas.
Now, more details about Haskins’ final moments have been revealed as Florida sports reporter Andy Slater reported that the former Ohio State quarterback had a high blood alcohol content level when he died.
“Dwayne Haskins had a blood-alcohol level of .24 when he was killed,” Slater tweeted. “Haskins had been out drinking at a Miami nightclub, got into a fight, and left, investigators say. He was in the car with a woman and they ran out of gas. Cops say the tragedy appears to be an accident.”
Slater added that “Haskins was walking around for about 20 minutes looking for gas, according to investigators.”
A Florida Highway Patrol spokesman said following Haskins’ death that “he was attempting to cross the westbound lanes of Interstate 595 when there was oncoming traffic.”
The details don’t diminish the tragedy of Haskins’ death, which shook football fans from Columbus to Pittsburgh and across the nation. They simply add context and understanding to a situation that left many with questions that they couldn’t answer.
