Tom Brady is in the middle of his second career. Now, the legendary NFL quarterback calls NFL games for FOX as a part of the network’s premier broadcast crew. Unfortunately for Brady, many fans and pundits have felt like his on-field success hasn’t translated to the booth, and don’t believe he is very good at calling the games, although most would agree that he has shown improvement.
Now, one of Brady’s old contemporaries on the field, former NFL quarterback Drew Brees, is making it clear that he believes he could step in and, unlike Brady, immediately be one of the best in the booth.
“I chuckle, because even as I look at the landscape right now, man I have so much respect for a lot of the guys in the booth right now, but I would step in the booth right now and be a top-three guy,” the New Orleans Saints legend said, according to Awful Announcing.
“Like, without question. And then you give me a few years, I could be the best. So look, I love the game. I love talking about the game. I feel like I have an insight to the game that is pretty unique given my playing experience. I see the game a totally different way, I process it a different way.
“So even as I watch games now and I just kind of listen to the commentary and this and that and what I’m seeing, I just feel like there’s so much more to add. So look, at the end of the day, I’m just going to wait for the right opportunity. And hopefully it comes along, but if it doesn’t that’s OK too … I do feel like I have a ton of value to add in the booth.”
Fans reacted to Brees’ bold proclamation on social media.
“This dude put me to sleep during his stint covering Notre Dame games…he is very much overrating his value in the booth,” one fan wrote on Twitter.
“He was so terrible on Notre Dame football. This is truly delusional stuff,” another fan added.
“I guess he never watched a tape of himself,” someone else wrote.
It’ll be interesting to see if a network gives Brees the opportunity to back up his words.
