Former president Donald Trump did not make any friends in New England Monday when he roasted the Patriots in a campaign speech.
Appearing in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, Trump ripped President Joe Biden’s negotiations with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Looking for an analogy, he started to use coach Bill Belichick and the Patriots, then quickly stopped himself.
According to Mediaite.com, Trump said, “For him to negotiate with President Xi of China is like my high school football team playing … Let’s see, what’s a good football team nowadays? Philadelphia’s good. You know they change a little bit. I used to say New England. I used to say the Patriots.”
The Patriots are far from the NFL’s gold standard these days. Following Sunday’s 34-0 beatdown by the New Orleans Saints, the Patriots are 1-4 and have been outscored 131 to 55.
There were some groans in the crowd after the comments. Trump tried to recover by saying, “I’d love to be able to say the Patriots. [Belichick] is a great guy, great coach, but they’re having a little hard time. What’s going on with the Patriots? But he’s a great coach. He’ll figure it out somehow, but that was not a good game last night, was it?”
Of all the crazy things Donald J. Trump has said in recent years — and critics and supporters alike agree he’s voiced some crazy thoughts — he hit the nail on the head with his breakdown of the Patriots’ disaster Sunday.
