Tua Tagovailoa returned to practice for the Miami Dolphins Wednesday, his first time on the field since he suffered a concussion two weeks ago.
But Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel said he doesn’t “see a scenario” where Tagovailoa will play Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings.
Tagovailoa, who has been in the concussion protocol since being injured in a game two weeks ago, received clearance to resume limited football activities.
“In these situations, you are relying on all medical advice and what people can do and what we’ve been told is he can go out and throw and do some individual work this week,” McDaniel said (via ESPN). “So that’s exciting for everybody just because, you know, really we just miss his personality. He’s a guy that we rely on that, not to mention all of his play and all that stuff.
“Now, when talking about this week and playing, I don’t see a scenario — I don’t see him being active. I do not plan to have him play at all.”
Backup quarterback Teddy Bridgewater is also in the concussion protocol, although McDaniel said he would likely resume limited activities Thursday. While there is a chance Bridgewater could clear concussion protocol by Sunday, McDaniel doesn’t plan for him to start.
That opens the door for rookie Skylar Thompson to make an impression for Miami (3-2). The former Kansas State quarterback, the Dolphins’ seventh-round pick this year, replaced Bridgewater Sunday against the New York Jets. He completed 19-of-33 attempts for 166 yards and an interception.
