The Detroit Lions were hoping that this preseason would provide them with a battle between backup quarterbacks to see who will serve behind Jared Goff on the depth chart. The battle never quite came together and now the NFL team is cutting one of the players they hoped would have performed better.

A week after head coach Dan Campbell said he was looking for one of the team’s reserve quarterbacks, Tim Boyle and David Blough, to “take the reins,” the Lions have cut Boyle.

The preseason battle, or lack thereof between the two, led some to wonder if Detroit would just be better off cutting both QBs and looking for someone else via free agency. We’ll see if they ultimately make that kind of decision with Blough or if he’s their No. 2 guy for now.

Boyle, who played for UConn and Eastern Kentucky in college, signed with the Green Bay Packers as an undrafted free agent in 2018. He made the roster and even saw the field in 2019 in garbage time. He became an unrestricted free agent after 2020 and signed a one-year contract with the Lions in March. When Goff missed time with injuries, Boyle got his first career start in 2021, though he went 0-3 on the season as the Lions’ starting quarterback.

In his NFL career, Boyle is 64 of 98 for 541 yards with three touchdowns and six interceptions. We’ll see if that gets him a chance on another NFL roster this season.
