After waiving five players on Tuesday to make room for their incoming draft class and free agents, the Detroit Lions cut one more player on Wednesday to prepare to host their rookie minicamp. The team announced that they have waived quarterback Steven Montez.
Montez started 38 games for the Colorado Buffaloes before going pro and signing with the Washington Football Team as an undrafted free agent in 2020. He started the season on the practice squad and was elevated to the active roster in December on multiple occasions. However, he didn’t see any game action and was waived in August 2021, though not before going 22-of-34 for 136 yards and one touchdown during the preseason.
Last September, he signed with the Lions and joined their practice squad but didn’t see the field this past season.
His father, Alfred, also briefly played in the NFL with the Oakland Raiders in 1996.
The Lions head into the preseason with Jared Goff, Tim Boyle, and David Blough on their roster. The team has also reportedly invited undrafted rookie quarterback Connor Sampson to camp. He could end up taking that spot on the practice squad or it’s entirely possible that the Lions could simply re-sign Montez if they can’t find anyone better.
