This offseason, the New York Giants are facing quite a concerning situation regarding starting quarterback Daniel Jones and star running back Saquon Barkley. Both are free agents, but the team only has one franchise tag available. This means that if the Giants want both players to return next season, they’ll need to sign at least one of them to an extension this offseason – and things aren’t looking too good on that subject.
The Giants hoped to come to an agreement with Danie Jones at this weekend’s NFL Combine in Indianapolis, ahead of next week’s franchise tag deadline. This would allow the team to then franchise tag Saquon Barkley. But according to a report from league insider Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network, the two sides were not able to come to a deal.
“After several days of meetings at the combine, #Giants officials and Daniel Jones’ agents from Athletes First are expected to leave Indianapolis on Sunday with no contract resolution in sight, per sources. Clock continuing to tick towards Tuesday’s franchise tag deadline,” Pelissero said in a tweet.
It’s a rather concerning update for the Giants, who undoubtedly would like to have this contract situation sorted out ahead of the franchise tag deadline. And the NFL world has plenty to say about it.
If the Giants do ultimately decide to hit Jones with the franchise tag, that would make Saquon Barkley a free agent.
