After missing four extra points in the Dallas Cowboys’ 31-14 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Monday, head coach Mike McCarthy said that the team would be sticking with Brett Maher going forward.
Though, that didn’t stop the Cowboys from looking for some insurance options. NFL insider Adam Schefter of ESPN confirmed as much when he reported earlier Wednesday that the Cowboys would likely bring in another kicker this week to compete, but Maher is still expected to be out there on Sunday in San Francisco.
A couple of hours later, NFL insider Tom Pelissero reported that the Cowboys are planning on signing kicker Tristan Vizcaino to the team’s practice squad. Vizcaino spent time with both the New England Patriots and Arizona Cardinals this NFL season. In three games, he’s made all five of his kicks, including three extra points.
The NFL world crushed Maher, who had missed just three extra points in the regular season, after a historically bad performance.
Still, the Cowboys made no assurances after Monday night’s game that they would be looking to add a kicker
While the Cowboys’ thinking hasn’t changed drastically since Monday night, it is notable that they have now elected to bring in insurance for Maher. In any event, Dallas wants to ensure that its kicking game isn’t the reason it may get eliminated this weekend by the 49ers.
