In case anyone is wondering who really runs the Dallas Cowboys, team owner Jerry Jones has clarified the issue.
In an appearance Tuesday on the Shan & RJ show on Audacy’s 105.3 The Fan, Jones addressed the recent trade that brought quarterback Trey Lance to Dallas in exchange for a fourth-round pick to the San Francisco 49ers.
While it’s too early in his career to call Lance a bust, he has struggled so far in limited playing time, and was not having a good training camp when the 49ers traded him.
Still, landing the No. 3 overall pick in 2021 for a fourth-round pick brings plenty of upside, but some fans have questioned the move.
Jones, however, has no doubts it’s a good trade. And the Cowboys didn’t need to convene a staff meeting to talk about it, either — Jones himself made the call. He said recently that no one on the team, not even head coach Mike McCarthy, knew about the trade until it was complete.
Tuesday, he explained why he didn’t ask anyone before acquiring Lance.
“The way we’re structured gets a lot of criticism. Unquestionably, it does,” Jones said (via Audacy). “But it lets us do a trade like we did the other day on Lance, because I didn’t have to fool around. I can make that trade in five minutes. And the reason I can is I have all the information, had it from when we drafted him, I had information right at my fingertips of what we thought of his play in the last couple of years.
“I knew what we thought of him. I didn’t have to visit with anybody about what type of player he is. So I was able to make the call. … I don’t have to talk to anybody about that.”
