Cowboys writer would ‘panic’ if Dak deal isn’t done by camp

The Dallas Cowboys have a fascinating 2024 season ahead of them. The NFL’s premier franchise hasn’t reached the NFC Championship Game since the 1995-96 season. Since then, it’s been nearly thirty years of the same verse. It hasn’t mattered who’s been under center or who’s led the team on the sidelines. With that said, the situation around quarterback Dak Prescott continues to be one to monitor.

Earlier this week, Cowboys writer R.J. Ochoa joined the Up and Adams Show with host Kay Adams. Ochoa and Adams discussed Prescott and the new contract that the former Mississippi State standout is due.

Dak hasn’t received that extension yet, and the Cowboys haven’t appeared to be on the same page as their quarterback yet. “It’s still early in the game,” said Ochoa. But the ‘Blogging the Boys’ head is willing to concede on something.

“If the Oxnard portion of Cowboys training camp happens with no Dak deal, then I will personally reach the panic point,” Ochoa said on X.

“We saw the money that Kirk Cousins commanded on the open market and has commanded on the open market twice,” Ochoa said on the Up and Adams Show. “Dak has the potential to do that and to do so in his early 30s. With all this attention, especially if he plays well again… I would offer that if this doesn’t get done before the season, at that point, I would kind of personally accept he’s probably moving on in 2025.”

Ochoa cited the closeness of it being the reason why he would move on. “He has the potential to do something historic,” Ochoa added on what Dak could do during free agency. In all, this will be one to watch through training camp.

“If they’re back from California without it done … That’s when I would reach DEFCON-1 and feel like this was going south,” Ochoa concluded.

In his career, the 2016 Offensive Rookie of the Year has thrown for 29,459 yards and 202 career touchdowns.
