The Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets speculation kicked into overdrive Friday afternoon after a couple of Green Bay area reporters offered conflicting accounts of the situation.

Chris Roth, sports director at Green Bay’s WBAY TV, reported that Green Bay Packers President Mark Murphy confirmed that the team will honor Rodgers’ trade request and the Packers have granted permission to the Jets to talk to the veteran quarterback.

Finally, Murphy said “everyone expects resolution by the start of free agency,” which begins March 15.

So, that basically makes it sound as if Rogers-to-the-Jets is a done deal, closing within days, right? Not so fast. Dave Schroeder, sports anchor at WBAY, noted that Murphy was asked if there is a scenario where Rodgers returns to Green Bay in 2023.

“Yeah, I mean unless, if things don’t work out the way we want them, yeah, we would,” Murphy said. “He is obviously a great player.”

So while they don’t necessarily rule it out, saying “if things don’t work out the way we want them” essentially is implying that they want to move the star quarterback.

After weeks of rumors and speculation, NFL fans quickly reacted to Friday’s news that 1) the two sides are making progress and a deal is in sight; or 2) Aaron Rodgers will be back in Green Bay next season.
