The Washington Commanders are currently in the process of trying to come to terms on a new deal with star wide receiver Terry McLaurin.
He is currently in the final year of his rookie contract, and the former Ohio State standout has decided to not attend mandatory minicamp for the team.
This has led to rumors of the team potentially trading McLaurin if they cannot come to a deal.
There will surely be a number of teams that would be interested if the Commanders made him available, but head coach Ron Rivera made his opinion on the matter very clear on Wednesday.
“We’re not trading Terry,” Rivera told reporters emphatically. “We’re trying to get this done… We believe in who Terry is for us and what he can bring to the table.”
It is certainly a promising statement for Commanders fans that are hoping that McLaurin will be the top option for the team for years to come.
That being said, it may come to a point where McLaurin becomes aggravated with the current situation going on in Washington.
There are a number of controversies currently going on within the organization, whether that be defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio’s comments on the U.S Capitol storming, or the multitude of controversies that surround owner Dan Snyder.
It is very clearly a franchise that is in flux, and that has been the case on the football field as well. They will undergo their latest starting quarterback next season, with Carson Wentz set to lead the team.
The team has had 13 quarterbacks start a game since 2018, resembling the same dysfunction that has been shown by the top levels of leadership within the organization.
McLaurin, a third-round draft pick in 2019, has thrived despite this in his young career. But he may decide sooner rather than later that he has had enough of this situation if the team cannot come to a contract extension with him in the coming weeks.
