The Washington Commanders added a Super Bowl champion to their roster on Wednesday. The Commanders signed veteran linebacker Bobby Wagner, who gained fame with the Legion of Boom Seahawks defense in the early 2010s.
Wagner joins the Commanders after a brief stint in Los Angeles with the Rams, which eventually led to Wagner re-joining the Seahawks on the short-term. Now, he’ll go to Washington, where new head coach Dan Quinn will likely be very excited.
NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reported the news on Wednesday afternoon. Rapoport posted the news on X, the website formerly known as Twitter.
“Seahawks perennial Pro Bowler and All-Pro LB Bobby Wagner is signing with the Commanders on a 1-year deal,” Rapoport said. He detailed that the contract was worth up to $8.5 million, and includes $6 million in guarantees.
Wagner is certainly on the back end of his prolific NFL career. He’s been one of the best linebackers in the NFL during his stint and was a huge piece to the puzzle in Seattle for many years. While the Commanders might not be in a position to make the playoffs, Wagner’s presence can provide veteran leadership for a group that desperately needs something.
Wagner has played 185 games in his career and totaled 1,706 tackles (996 solo), six forced fumbles, and 33.0 sacks. He’s one of the most accomplished active players in the entire league.
