The Indianapolis Colts are eyeing a move on the offensive side of the ball, hosting a workout for Super Bowl champion Sammy Watkins on Monday.
Watkins, an eight-year veteran of the NFL, last played in 2022 with the Green Bay Packers for nine games before being released and signing with the Baltimore Ravens, where he played for the rest of the season.
He is perhaps best known for his first three seasons with the Buffalo Bills. But he also played a role in the 2020 Super Bowl championship for the Kansas City Chiefs.
Watkins was one of four players that the Colts hosted for a workout on Monday, according to Joel Erickson of the Indy Star.
This should come as no surprise, as the Colts have been looking for added help at the wide receiver position. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Colts were in the market for a wide receiver at the trade deadline, but ultimately weren’t able to get a deal done.
Watkins has shown in the past that he can be a productive player in the right situation. And Colts fans are certainly hoping he can do just that if the Colts decide to sign him.
As Colts fans stated above, this could also be telling about the health of wide receiver Josh Downs.
Downs has been excellent thus far in his rookie season, but suffered a knee injury in the team’s Week 9 game against the Carolina Panthers.
If the Colts do indeed sign Watkins and Downs’ injury forces him to miss some time, Watkins could find himself with an immediate role with the team.
