An unfortunate injury occurred on Tuesday during practice for the Indianapolis Colts regarding punter Rigoberto Sanchez, and we now know that is a serious injury for the veteran punter.
The entire Colts roster was forced to run “suicide sprints” at the end of practice on Tuesday, and Sanchez went down with an Achilles injury while doing the sprints.
This is an unusual activity for a punter to take part in during practice, and it ended up being extremely costly for the organization.
It was revealed on Wednesday that Sanchez has suffered a torn Achilles, and will be sidelined for the entirety of the 2022-23 NFL season.
Sanchez has been one of the most underrated punters in all of football since his NFL debut in 2017, finishing just outside the top-10 in punts inside the 20-yard-line last season.
The Colts will now need to quickly find a punter to replace Sanchez with only a little over two weeks before the start of the upcoming season.
A potential option for them could be former Buffalo Bills punter Matt Haack, who was released by the organization last week in favor of rookie sensation Matt Araiza, more commonly referred to as the “Punt God” known for the incredible distance on his punts.
It remains to be seen whether the Colts are even interested in Haack, but regardless they will need to figure out their punting situation fast after this unfortunate diagnosis was revealed about Sanchez on Wednesday.
