The Cleveland Browns quarterback situation has gone through significant upheaval in recent weeks and the team wasn’t done adding to their depth chart.
Following their blockbuster trade for Deshaun Watson, the Browns have found themselves in a situation where they need to off-load a disgruntled Baker Mayfield before the season starts.
In the meantime, the franchise is also stockpiling backup quarterbacks for Watson, who may or may not have to miss time this season due to a potential suspension related to the sexual harassment and assault allegations made against him. According to Adam Schefter, the Browns have signed former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Joshua Dobbs.
Dobbs, who played college football at Tennessee, was drafted by the Steelers in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL Draft. Buried on the depth chart in his rookie season, Dobbs saw action in five games in 2018, mostly in clean-up duty. He was traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2019 but was waived a year later. He re-signed with the Steelers in 2020 and appeared in one game for them before spending all of 2021 on iu=njured reserve.
In his career, Dobbs is 10-of-17 for 45 yards and one interception.
The Browns traded away previous No. 2 QB Case Keenum to the Bills during the offseason for a draft pick.
Obviously, the Browns are bringing him in as a deep backup option and will likely look to a more seasoned quarterback to be Watson’s No. 2 on the depth chart. But it can’t hurt to have someone familiar with how one of your divisional rivals works on your roster as well.
