The Cleveland Browns quarterback situation has been a nightmare all off-season.
The Baker Mayfield drama was ratcheted up after the team traded for Deshaun Watson. They eventually traded Mayfield to the Carolina Panthers but Watson’s baggage culminated in an 11-game suspension this season, which meant a true need for quarterback depth in the interim. While the team spurned the idea of trading for Jimmy Garoppolo and put its faith in Jacoby Brissett, they’d also signed former first-round pick Josh Rosen to compete.
Turns out that Rosen won’t be part of their plans to start the 2022 NFL season as the draft busy was cut as part of roster trims.
Josh Dobbs will be the third-string quarterback behind Brissett and Watson, though it’s entirely likely that the team will keep their eye on the quarterback market as needed, especially if Brissett gets hurt during Watson’s suspension.
The Browns were Rosen’s fifth stop in the NFL, which is not what many people would have expected when the UCLA QB was selected 10th overall in the 2018 NFL Draft by the Arizona Cardinals. He’s appeared in 24 NFL games in his four years in the league but hasn’t started a game since 2019 in his brief stint in Miami.
We’ll see if Rosen can catch on somewhere else or if the Browns sign him to their practice squad.
