Most of the offseason, it looked like Jimmy Garoppolo would be traded from the San Francisco 49ers as the team initially attempted to deal the former Super Bowl starter but eventually decided to keep him with the team on a restructured contract as the backup to second-year quarterback Trey Lance. It worked out well for them after a brutal injury derailed Lance’s first season as a starter and Garoppolo was there to save San Francisco’s season.
Jimmy Garoppolo has been vitally important to the Niners this season as the team is currently in first place in the NFC West and is coming off a massive win over the Arizona Cardinals on Monday night. He’s even impressed newcomer Christian McCaffrey.
“He is such a talented quarterback,” McCaffrey said, according to Jennifer Lee Chan of NBCSportsBayArea.com. “He doesn’t get enough credit in my eyes, at all. He is a great leader, super smart, can make any throw and is just a great guy to be around. It’s been a lot of fun to be able to pick his brain and mesh with him.”
It’s unlikely McCaffrey will get to play alongside Garoppolo past this season as Lance is expected to take over as the team’s starter once again next season. But he’s clearly enjoying this season.
