The Kansas City Chiefs have slowly grown into a potential dynasty in recent years, looking for their third straight Super Bowl Championship next season. And on Thursday, they added an intriguing new weapon from an entirely different sport.
Louis Rees-Zammit, a 23-year-old European rugby player, participated in the NFL’s International Player Pathway pro day last week in hopes of garnering the attention of an NFL team.
He put up some impressive testing numbers at the Pro Day, running a 4.43-second 40-yard dash. And this was seemingly enough for the Chiefs to take a chance on him.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Chiefs have agreed to terms on a contract with Rees-Zammit, giving the team an intriguing young athlete with an entirely different skill set than the majority of their current players on the roster.
His lack of experience playing football obviously begs the question. What position will Rees-Zammit play for the Chiefs at the NFL level?
Well, according to ESPN’s Adam Teicher, the rugby star will be listed as a running back, wide receiver hybrid. But perhaps even a bigger impact Rees-Zammit may come on special teams.
With the NFL’s new kickoff rules seemingly favoring dynamic kick returners once again, Rees-Zammit could provide some real value in a potential returner role for the Chiefs.
It will sure be interesting to see where Rees-Zammit finds a role on this team. If he does at all.
Is it even guaranteed that he will make the 53-man active roster? Probably not, but he could certainly be a very interesting player to watch throughout training camp.
