Sunday’s Super Bowl LVII matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles was a shootout between star quarterbacks Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts. However, the game’s most important play perhaps came from the Chiefs’ special teams on a record-breaking punt return from Kadarius Toney.
The play occurred in the fourth quarter with the Chiefs clinging to a 28-27 lead. The Eagles had gone for it on fourth down on numerous occasions in this game, but they made the decision to punt on this possession.
This would come back to cost the Eagles, as Kadarius Toney would return the punt 65 yards and set the Chiefs up in prime position to score, bringing it all the way to the Philadelphia four-yard line.
Toney’s incredibly clutch return broke the record for the longest punt return in Super Bowl history. This breaks the previous record held by former Denver Broncos return man Jordan Norwood for his 61-yard return in Super Bowl 50.
It couldn’t have come at a more opportune time for Kansas City, and many praised Toney for the unbelievable effort on the return.
This comes after Toney caught another huge impact play earlier game, scoring on a five-yard touchdown pass from Patrick Mahomes.
The Chiefs famously traded for the second-year wide receiver earlier in the season after Toney had issues with the New York Giants before getting traded. This trade has paid off unbelievably for Kansas City, and they are now benefitting from his impressive play on the grandest stage in sports.
