The Los Angeles Chargers brought in head coach Jim Harbaugh immediately after he won the national championship with the Michigan Wolverines, hoping that his proven track record of success on both college and NFL sidelines would bring the playoff success the Chargers have been desperately missing.
Los Angeles feels that it has one of the best quarterbacks in the league in Justin Herbert. Unfortunately, Herbert and the Chargers haven’t been able to put everything together in the playoffs when it matters most.
Unfortunately, in Harbaugh’s first season at the helm in LA, things didn’t change much, with Herbert turning in his worst performance of the season in the Wild Card round against the Houston Texans, resulting in an early exit from the playoffs.
Now, the franchise is deciding to make a change at the position heading into the 2025 season, according to one prominent league insider, maybe in the hopes that a new backup will push Herbert to be the best version of himself.
“The #Chargers have released veteran QB Taylor Heinicke. That means Trey Lance has won the backup job to Justin Herbert,” reported Ari Meirov on Twitter.
Fans reacted to the news on social media.
“Trey is good. Needs a legit chance. Good for him,” one fan wrote on Twitter.
“Sounds crazy but I wouldn’t mind him as a veteran 4th QB,” one Cleveland Browns fan said of Heinicke.
“Raiders wasted a pick on Kenny Pickett when this demon could be with us for cheap,” added someone else.
It’ll be interesting to see if the Chargers are finally able to make a sustained playoff run, and also to see if Heinicke lands with another team this season.
