Earlier this season, the Washington Commanders decided to stick with Taylor Heinicke as the team’s starting quarterback even after former start Carson Wentz returned from his injury. But head coach Ron Rivera knew it was always a possibility he went back to Wentz as the starter, and it appears that time has come.
As reported by NFL insider Adam Schefter of ESPN, Carson Wentz has been named the team’s starting quarterback for Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Browns as Taylor Heinicke has been benched.
“Commanders’ QB Carson Wentz will start Sunday vs. Cleveland. Wentz broke his right ring finger in October, and later lost the starting job to Taylor Heinicke. The Commanders are 7-7-1, clinging to the NFC’s seventh and final playoff spot, and need Wentz to come through,” Schefter said in a Tweet.
It’s an absolute massive decision as the Commanders continue to pursue a playoff spot, and the NFL world had plenty to say about the move on Twitter.
“He had this exact situation last year in Indy. Colts season on the line, he put up: vs LVR: 16-27 148 yds 1 TD (86.7) @ Jax 17-29 185 yds 1 TD 1 int 1 FL (74.6) Let’s see how this plays out,” Jason Spears pointed out in a Tweet.
“When the betting markets don’t react to you changing quarterbacks, you’ve probably made a coinflip decision,” Fabian Sommer said in a Tweet.
What we know for sure is the Commanders are never going anywhere until they find a real quarterback. https://t.co/AQQoHHfQ9K
