Arizona will be without star quarterback Kyler Murray until at least the start of next season. So the Cardinals are in need of a replacement for the most coveted position.
The team turned to one on Wednesday as the Cardinals signed quarterback David Blough. Arizona plucked Blough, who went undrafted in 2019, off the Minnesota Vikings’ practice squad to essentially “replace” Murray this season.
Ian Rapoport tweeted the news of the signing on Wednesday afternoon. He said, “The Arizona Cardinals are signing QB David Blough off the Vikings practice squad, source said. He takes Kyler Murray’s spot.”
Blough most famously played for the Detroit Lions in his short career. The former Purdue standout has spent time with the Cleveland Browns practice squad as well as the Vikings’. He’s amassed 1,033 career passing yards with four touchdowns and seven interceptions. Blough completed 54. 4 percent of his passes and posted a career QB rating of 62.2.
Expectations aren’t going to be too high for Blough or backup quarterback Colt McCoy. The Cardinals are 4-9 and don’t stand much of a shot of making the NFL Playoffs. They were a meager 1-7 at home this season even with the star Murray at quarterback.
Funnily enough, this is a signing that impacts Hard Knocks. Blough was on the show with the Lions earlier this year before he was cut in favor of Nate Sudfeld. Now, he joins the Cardinals, whose mid-season Hard Knocks trudges on.
