The Arizona Cardinals have a huge matchup to begin the 2022-23 NFL season, facing off against the Kansas City Chiefs to begin the year. Ahead of the game, Arizona made a big decision regarding their primary backup to quarterback Kyler Murray on Wednesday that could have a significant impact should anything happen to their starter.
The Cardinals have placed veteran quarterback Colt McCoy on injured reserve, guaranteeing that he will miss at least the first four games of the season.
In a corresponding move, the team has promoted former Baltimore Ravens quarterback Trace McSorley to their active roster from their practice squad. McSorley will seemingly be the team’s primary backup quarterback until McCoy is ready to return to action.
McCoy has a ton of experience at the NFL level over his 11-year NFL career, providing Arizona with a very capable backup in comparison to McSorley, who has only attempted ten throws in his NFL career.
Considering Murray missed three regular-season games last season, it certainly has to be a very uneasy feeling to not have McCoy to begin the year as insurance in case he were to get injured. Regardless, the Cardinals will look to sustain the regular-season success that they had last season while trying to have a better postseason this year should they make it to the playoffs.
