Los Angeles Rams running back Cam Akers was a second-round pick by the team and was once considered a star player from the Rams and their top running back. But he hasn’t played in either of the team’s first two games this season, and it doesn’t sound like fans should expect to see him on the field anytime soon.
During a press conference following the Rams’ 30-23 loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, head coach Sean McVay gave an update on the status of Cam Akers, making it clear that Akers will remain inactive from the team as the Rams move forward with Kyren Williams, Ronnie Rivers, and Royce Freeman as the team’s running backs. McVay said the decision is “in the best interest of our football team.”
McVay was then asked if that meant if it seemed like Akers had played his last snap with the team, but he wouldn’t commit to that.
“I think there is going to be an opportunity to see what that looks like moving forward, but it’s not going to be a back-and-forth thing,” McVay said according to Pro Football Talk. “He and I have had great dialogue and we’ll see what happens over the next couple days.”
It’s certainly a bizarre situation involving the one-time star player. It will be interesting to see how it develops.
