The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are entering a new era of football with the retirement of star quarterback Tom Brady earlier this offseason. Former No. 1 pick Baker Mayfield appears to be in their plans as they look to move on from Brady.
The Buccaneers signed Mayfield to a one-year $4 million deal this offseason, essentially a lottery ticket on a once-promising quarterback to potentially turn around his career.
Things seem to be going well with Mayfield as he gets comfortable with another new offensive system.
Bucs general manager Jason Licht discussed on Tuesday how Mayfield has looked getting adjusted to his new team, saying that he is “really impressed” by the former Oklahoma standout.
“Baker’s been fantastic here getting adjusted to his teammates and the culture here,” Licht said via Joebucsfan.com in a Sirius XM Radio appearance. “Everybody, our staff, everybody downstairs has been really, really impressed with how he’s handled himself so far.”
However, this doesn’t exactly mean that Mayfield is the undisputed starter in Tampa Bay. Licht also praised third-year quarterback Kyle Trask, who he says will compete with Mayfield for the starting job.
“Kyle (Trask) is just the Steady Eddie. He works very hard. He’s very smart. Nothing seems to rattle Kyle. And that goes all the way back to his high school days waiting for his opportunity and then thriving when it comes up.
“So this is going to be a really, really, interesting competition all the way through training camp. Because it truly is going to be a competition. And I know that they’re both very excited to get this thing going.”
It certainly feels like Mayfield’s job to lose considering Trask’s inexperience. He has yet to start an NFL game and only appeared once last season for the Buccaneers.
Regardless, Jason Light appears dead set on making Mayfield earn the starting job.
