The Denver Broncos could reveal the franchise’s next head coach as soon as Wednesday, according to NFL sources.
According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, “some” sources believe that the Broncos could kick off the league’s annual hiring process.
San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans “impressed” the franchise. Former Stanford Cardinal coach David Shaw is a “very viable candidate.” While Former New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton, “looms over multiple jobs,” according to Florio.
Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn also interviewed for the vacancy. While “it’s believed” Quinn would also bring former Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell with him to Denver. It’s unknown whether franchise quarterback Russell Wilson is on board with that possibility.
The Broncos fired then-coach Nathaniel Hackett after a 5-12 season saw them finish in last place in AFC West standings.
“While many think the Broncos will now lean heavily toward hiring a former NFL head coach, Shaw’s experience running a major college program for a dozen years could be seen as just as good as NFL head-coaching experience, especially since (unlike recent former college head coaches who failed quickly in the NFL)” Florio wrote. “Shaw has nine years of experience working with NFL teams.”
Whether it’s Shaw or somebody else remains to be seen. But one thing is certain: A decision appears close.
