The New York Giants are moving on, as Sunday started their first season of the post-Daniel Jones era. New York added three quarterbacks in response to Jones’ departure: veterans Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston, as well as rookie Jaxson Dart, whom New York selected in the first round of the 2025 NFL draft.
Giants head coach Brian Daboll named Russell Wilson the starter earlier in the offseason and stood by the decision heading into Week One, even though Dart was extremely impressive in the preseason. However, Dart made it clear that he is fine with waiting for his first opportunity to take the field.
“I feel like whenever my number is called, I’m gonna go out there, I’m gonna play my game and I’m gonna ball,” he said.
“That’s just my mindset any time I touch the field. Obviously, Russ is the starter, and he’s going to do amazing. He’s had such a great camp and has played at an elite level. My job is just to be the best teammate and be ready whenever it is. I’m excited for Russ and what he’s going to do this year.”
However, Dart made it clear he’s still very confident in his ability.
“When I step on the field, I expect to play at a high level. I have the confidence that I’m going to be the best player on the field every time.”
Now, it appears that he may have the chance to show the league what he’s got sooner than initially expected. Following the Giants’ 21-6 loss on Sunday, Daboll chose not to commit to Wilson being the starting quarterback in Week Two.
“We’re going to get home and look at our game,” Daboll said after being asked if he’d think about starting Dart next week, according to ESPN.
If Dart gets the nod, it could be the end of Wilson’s time as a starter in the league.
