Anyone tuning into ESPN’s “Monday Night Countdown” witnessed an uncomfortable but entertaining debate between analysts Booger McFarland and Steve Young.
The topic: New York Jets quarterback Zach Wilson.
There wouldn’t seem to be much to debate there, as everyone agrees the former BYU quarterback had a terrible game in a 10-3 loss to the New England Patriots. Afterward, when a reporter asked if he felt bad for letting down his defense, Wilson answered with a curt “No” and refused to elaborate. It got worse: A report claimed that Wilson angered several teammates by acting “like he isn’t the problem” following the game.
McFarland ripped Wilson as, essentially, a privileged rich kid who’d never learned accountability.
“Let’s understand who this young man is before we ask him to accept accountability,” McFarland said (via Awful Announcing). “He’s a young man who grew up with a lot of money. I don’t think he’s ever had to accept accountability. So now on the biggest stage we want this quarterback to accept accountability.”
Young, who also attended BYU, immediately disagreed.
“That doesn’t … that doesn’t resonate at all,” Young said. “He’s a tough-minded kid, he’s comfortable — ”
“Steve!” McFarland said, cutting off Young. “He hasn’t had to accept accountability, so now on the biggest stage we want this kid to be an adult in front of grown men and accept accountability.”
The debate went on for several minutes. Meanwhile, fellow analyst Robert Griffin III sat between the two men, trying to maintain a stone face.
NFL fans who watched the show live or caught the clip on social media generally disagreed with McFarland. And watch out — the RG3 stone face might just become a viral meme.
