On Monday night, Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin suffered a terrifying injury that left him in desperate need of life-saving CPR on the field and ambulance transport to the nearest hospital. Though he’s made a remarkable recovery, he will obviously be unable to play for the Bills for quite some time. And based on his contract, that normally would have cost him financially – but it looks like Buffalo is doing the right thing.
As league insider Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network said in a Tweet on Sunday morning, Damar Hamlin has a contract that pays him a lower rate if is ever placed on Injured Reserve. But he’ll be getting his full paycheck.
“#Bills S Damar Hamlin’s 4-year, $3.64M contract contains a standard split to pay him at a lower rate if he lands on Injured Reserve. This week, he was placed on IR. However, sources say Buffalo has worked out an agreement with the NFL and NFLPA to pay him in full,” Schefter said in a Tweet.
It’s a surprising and unorthodox move, but it’s certainly the right one. Hamlin quite literally risked his life for the team and the first thing he asked once he was conscious again was whether or not they won the game.
