The New England Patriots’ offense has been a disaster this season under questionable offensive play-caller Matt Patricia, and it appears that head coach Bill Belichick may be interested in a potential reunion with Alabama offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien.
NBC Sports Boston insider for the Patriots Tom Curran reported on Tuesday that sources inside the locker room believe that Belichick would undoubtedly be interested in bringing back O’Brien to take over the play-calling responsibilities next year.
“We’ve been talking Bill O’Brien for weeks now. I spoke to some folks who would know, and they said absolutely Bill Belichick would be interested in having O’Brien back. They added that they would be surprised if that wasn’t already in the works, or already a done deal to bring him back,” said Curran on the potential reunion.
O’Brien was with the Patriots from 2007-2011, serving as the team’s offensive coordinator in his final year with the team before returning to the college ranks at Alabama after a stint as head coach of the Houston Texans.
There have certainly been critics of the Patriots’ current offense headed by Patricia. Even Patriots quarterback Mac Jones has seemed to criticize the offense at different points this year on the sidelines.
O’Brien experienced some great success in New England in the past, so it could be a great fit if he’s looking to return to the NFL level next year.
