The Cincinnati Bengals are trying to get back to the playoffs after a two-year hiatus. The Bengals are desperate to get back to the Super Bowl and bring the Lombardi trophy back to Southwest Ohio for the first time in franchise history.
Cincinnati knows that its championship window is open now, while star quarterback Joe Burrow is in his prime and has Tee Higgins and Ja’Marr Chase as weapons. However, it’s critical that Burrow is supported by an elite defense, something the Bengals have struggled to provide.
Now, Cincinnati is doing something about that, according to one prominent league insider.
“Sources: The #Bengals are signing former #Chiefs DT Mike Pennel. The plan is to start Pennel – a 2x Super Bowl champ- on the practice squad, and then get elevated early in the season. Another veteran addition to Cincinnati,” reported Jordan Schultz on Monday.
Fans reacted to the news on social media.
“Bengals and Steelers going hard for that WC spot,” one fan wrote on Twitter.
“I remember Bengals signed the DT from the Patriots last mid season…he looked OK then they released him after few weeks,” someone else added.
“Still confused on why he isn’t a chief if D-Line depth is a priority for us,” one Chiefs fan wrote.
It’ll be interesting to see how the move works out for the Bengals.
