As expected, the Chicago Bears have officially ruled out quarterback Justin Fields for Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers.
That news set the Tyson Bagent hype train rolling full speed down the track. The former Division II star, who went undrafted this year, will get his second straight start Sunday.
Bagent played relatively well in Week 7’s win over the Las Vegas Raiders, completing 21-of-29 passes for 162 yards and a touchdown. That performance has led to plenty of debate among Bears and NFL fans over whether Bagent should be given a shot at being QB1 even after Fields returns from his thumb injury.
Bears coach Matt Eberflus gave his take on the matter after Sunday’s game, saying, “Justin is our starting quarterback. Tyson’s the backup, he came in and did a nice job …”
Eberflus told reporters Friday that Fields is “progressing. We’re happy with where he is.”
Meanwhile, the Fields vs. Bagent debate is raging in Bears fandom. Some fans are convinced that Fields is not the long-term answer at. QB, and the Bears should draft a quarterback (Caleb Williams?) in 2024. Others think he deserves more time to prove himself. And other fans feel the same way about Bagent, wanting to see what he can do.
Friday’s announcement added more fuel to that quarterback controversy.
