The Chicago Bears have decided on who will back up Justin Fields this season. It will be former Denver Broncos quarterback Trevor Siemian, who beat out Nathan Peterman for the backup spot with the Bears.
According to Ian Rapoport, Peterman will be released with the hope that the Bears can re-sign him to the practice squad.
Peterman was signed by the Bears back in the spring after playing with the Las Vegas Raiders for three years and backing up starter Derek Carr.
Before that, Peterman was picked in the 5th round of the NFL Draft back in 2017 by the Buffalo Bills. Peterman struggled as a starter for the Bills back in 2017, winning only one of his three starts and throwing more way interceptions (12) than touchdowns (3). His struggles at quarterback lead the Bills to draft Josh Allen the next year in the draft, which is how Peterman ended up with the Raiders.
Peterman had a pretty good pre-season, going 14-of-24 for 178 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions.
But ultimately, the Bears went with Siemian, who was the starter for the Broncos after Peyton Manning retired. Since then, he has been with five different teams, including the Bears, since leaving the Broncos.
