The Chicago Bears brought in former Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson to turn around the culture and maximize the talents of young quarterback Caleb Williams. Unfortunately, after two games, the Bears are winless and Williams has struggled with his consistency.
Now, Johnson is letting his team hear it.
“I think our practice habits are yet to reflect a championship-caliber team,” he said, according to Fox News.
“We should be going to the football, finishing hard,” he continued. “We talk about it all the time with the offensive players that our fundamentals, our finish and our technique, they need to show up in walk-through, they need to show up on the practice field.
“That’s how it shows up on game day. Simple things of how do we properly block? How do we catch the ball? How do we block after the catch? Ball security and things like that. It’s the little things that you learn in youth league football that even at this level, they make a huge difference.”
Fans reacted to Johnson’s harsh words on social media.
“AKA I have loser players who are soft because my GM has absolutely no idea how to evaluate talent,” one fan wrote on Twitter.
“Bears haven’t won a playoff game since 2010/2011 – good for Ben to try and turn that thing upside down + tear the roots out,” someone else added.
“You can hear the anger but if the team comes out flat again then this might be a whole roster issue,” one fan added.
It’ll be interesting to see if Johnson can get things turned around in time to salvage the season.
