The Kliff Kingsbury era is officially over for the Arizona Cardinals.
The Cardinals announced Kingsbury was fired Monday morning after the franchise finished with a 4-13 record, good enough for last place in the NFC West.
“Sources: The Arizona Cardinals fired head coach Kliff Kingsbury, who 10 months ago signed a contract extension through the 2027 season. The Cardinals still never have had a head coach – any head coach – last longer than six years while the team has existed for over 100 years,” ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Monday morning.
Kingsbury played collegiately with the Texas Tech Raiders before having a multiyear career in the NFL and CFL. He began his coaching career in 2008 as offensive quality control coach for the Houston Cougars. Kingsbury began his head coaching career with his alma mater, Texas Tech, in 2013. He jumped to the NFL with the Cardinals in 2019, a job he held until his Monday firing.
“This was one of those seasons where there was no hiding from where it was at,” Kingsbury said after the latest disappointing season, according to arizonacardinals.com. He said he saw the season as “motivation to be a lot better moving forward. As a competitor that’s the first thing you think of.”
