Things have not gone well for the New York Jets in 2023. The season took a sharp nosedive on the fourth offensive play when quarterback Aaron Rodgers tore his Achilles. If he returns to the Jets or even the NFL, it certainly won’t be until next season, right?
Not necessarily. At least not according to Rodgers.
Prior to Sunday night’s game between the Jets and Kansas City Chiefs, NBC’s Melissa Stark reported that after Sunday’s game, Rodgers will return to California to “Aggressively continue rehabbing. Over five hours.” Then, after saying that Rodgers was planning to rejoin the Jets “permanently after their Week 7 bye,” she dropped an even bigger potential update.
“He told me his goal is to play again this season.”
The report was met with a lot of skepticism and curiosity.
Rodgers returning for the end of the regular season would mean a 17-week (or fewer) recovery from an Achilles tear. That is several weeks faster than even the most optimistic reports.
The other issue, of course, is what is happening in the season. New York was 1-2 heading into Sunday’s game with an offense that had provided little to no reason for optimism. Even if Rodgers, who will turn 40 in December, is able to play, would it make sense for him or the Jets to risk it if they’re out of postseason contention?
