Between Trey Lance‘s season-ending injury and Jimmy Garoppolo‘s bizarre contract situation heading into the season, it’s been quite a rollercoaster for the San Francisco 49ers at the quarterback position, and they just made another move at the position this week.
According to Ari Meirov of Pro Football Focus, The San Francisco 49ers are releasing veteran NFL quarterback Kurt Benkert from the team’s practice squad.
“The #49ers have signed RB Tevin Coleman to the 53-man roster and released QB Kurt Benkert from the practice squad,” Meriov said in a Tweet on Wednesday.
While Benkert has not made much of an impact in the league, appearing in only one game so far in his career, he added vital depth to a position that was sorely lacking after the injury to Lance, who was named the team’s starter at the beginning of the season.
After serving as the starting quarterback for the Virginia Cavaliers for two seasons from 2016 to 2017 where he set a school record for passing yards in a game with 455 his senior season, Benkert signed with the Atlanta Falcons as an undrafted free agent in 2018. He stayed with the team for a few seasons before signing with the Green Bay Packers in 2021 and the Niners ahead of this season.
