One of the most memorable moments in college football history was when Texas Longhorns quarterback Vince Young scampered into the end zone for a 41-38 victory over the USC Trojans in the 2006 Rose Bowl.
As of 2022, that was the last time Texas won the National Championship and things haven’t been great in Austin in recent years. With Arch Manning committing to play for the Longhorns, it’s bringing newfound hope to the school and the Heisman Trophy finalist opened up on First Take about the latest Manning QB.
After being asked about how Manning will handle the pressure of his family name plus playing for Texas, Young had nothing but confidence that Arch will overcome the pressure and be a great quarterback.
“[Arch] is in a family that is going to teach him the best way they can and the way they know how that works. And I really feel like that’s not going to be an issue for him at all.”
“What I do know is, in this quarterback room, having these big-time quarterbacks, from Maalik [Murphy], from Hudson Card, to Quinn [Ewers], it’s going to be a heated competition in that quarterback room which we all like. And it doesn’t do nothing but make him better and it makes all of them better. It makes them mentally tough so that’s what we’re going to need. When you’re playing at the University of Texas, you’re pretty much an NFL quarterback already. So you’re going to need to have that pressure and that competition in the quarterback room. So I’m just happy that he made the decision to come to the University of Texas as he’s already helping out with recruitment and things like that so it’s going to be good for him as well as all the rest of the quarterbacks. And I love it because I’m going to be sitting in that room with them.”
Ignoring the part that many are going to point to, Young has a point. This is a stacked quarterback group and the competition will be fierce. That competition should push them to be better because they’re all going to be competing for playing time. They might not yet be an NFL quarterback like Young says Longhorn QB’s are, but they could be setting themselves up for that possibility.
