The Tennessee Volunteers are flying high. The Vols football team started building momentum in the fall with one of their best seasons in recent memory. The men’s and women’s basketball teams are each in the Sweet 16. Tennessee baseball is nationally ranked, 12th in the D1Baseball poll. Lady Vols softball is also on an absolute tear, posting a 24-1 record to this point. They’re No. 3 in the country in D1Softball’s poll.
One area where the Lady Vols have excelled? Pitching. Lady Vol hurlers have put together some insane stats through the first month and change of the season.
The Lady Vols’ softball account boasted their prodigious efforts so far this season:
“Lady Vols in the circle
- Nation-leading ERA – 0.62
- 17 shutouts – No. 1 in SEC, Tied for first nationally
- 1 perfect game, 1 no-hitter, five one-hitters
- Just 13 extra-base hits allowed in 157 innings
- Only 15 runs allowed through 25 games
#LadyVols #GBO”
Those are some insane and prolific numbers. Tennessee has tailed away from some of the competition in the SEC to this point and their pitching staff is an absolutely huge reason why. They are teed up to face 13th-ranked Alabama in a massive showdown this weekend. ‘Bama has no shortage of great arms themselves, chief among them Montana Fouts. So it could be a doozy when the two teams take the field this weekend in Knoxville.
The college sports world reacted to these insane numbers in droves. Reactions came from many, including head coach Karen Weekly and assistant coach Megan Smith.
