The Notre Dame Fighting Irish are 0-2 to start the 2022 college football season after a season-opening loss to Ohio State in Week One and an upset loss to the Marshall Thundering Herd this weekend. And the bad news keeps pouring in as it looks like the team will now be without starting quarterback Tyler Buchner for the rest of the year.
According to Matt Fortuna of The Athletic, Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman announced on Monday that Buchner will have surgery on Tuesday and is expected to miss four months after suffering a grade 5 AC sprain in his non-throwing shoulder during the team’s loss on Saturday.
Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman says QB Tyler Buchner is likely out for the year: "He ended up getting I think a Grade 5 out of 6 AC sprain in his non-throwing shoulder."
Buchner will have surgery tomorrow and the expected recovery time is 4 months.

“He ended up getting I think a Grade 5 out of 6 AC sprain in his non-throwing shoulder,” Freeman said, according to Fortuna.
With Buchner out, the Irish will turn to third-year quarterback Drew Pyne as their starter for the rest of the season. Pyne has appeared in five games throughout his Notre Dame career after signing with the team out of high school in 2020. In his career, Pyne is 20-for-39 through the air for 256 yards and three touchdowns along with one interception.
The Irish entered 2022 with national title aspirations. Now after an 0-2 start and an injury to their starting quarterback, the team is just trying to salvage the season.
