In what seemed like an inevitable move, the NCAA announced that all winter and spring championships have been canceled. The statement addressed the slight movement that had arisen in favor of simply postponing the basketball tournaments to a later date, noting that it wasn’t a feasible idea.
“The decision is based on the evolving COVID-19 public health threat, our ability to ensure the events do not contribute to spread of the pandemic, and the impracticality of hosting such events at any time during this academic year given ongoing decisions by other entities.”
The prospect of playing in empty gyms was already surreal enough, but now that we know it’s not happening at all it’s even crazier. This really sucks for sports fans, obviously, but it’s a reminder that there are a lot of things much more important than sports, no matter what your cousin on Facebook screaming about it all being an overreaction is saying.
