Mississippi State wins College World Series for school’s first-ever national title in any team sport; Will Bednar fires 6 no-hit innings

Mississippi State has been playing team sports since 1895, and they’ve never had a national title- until Wednesday night.

The Bulldogs took down the Vanderbilt Commodores 9-0 in the College World Series championship game (Game 3) in Omaha.

The Mississippi State offense was terrific, scoring five runs against Vandy starting pitcher Kumar Rocker, a likely top-10 pick in next month’s MLB Draft.

But the story of the game was the incredible pitching from Mississippi State’s Will Bednar (who’s projected to go 19th in the mock draft linked above).

Bednar threw six no-hit innings before being pulled at 90 pitches; the Bulldogs scored four runs in the top of the seventh to take a 9-0 lead, so there was no reason to force Bednar to throw more pitches with the game out of hand. He was filthy.

Bednar was fantastic in his three games in Omaha, allowing just five hits and three runs — to go with 26 strikeouts — over 18 1/3 innings pitched.

They’ll be partying hard in Starkville over the next several days.
