The LSU Tigers-Florida Gators game Saturday saw a couple of wild interceptions by the Tigers’ defense. First, LSU cornerback Eli Ricks came up with a pick-six off Florida QB Kyle Trask. Then, on the Gators’ next possession, a Trask throw went off receiver Kadarius Toney, off the helmet of defensive back Dwight McGlothern, and was caught by defensive back Jay Ward (who had just reestablished himself inbounds). Here’s how that looked in real time:
Here’s a look at that from the pylon cam:
And here’s another replay:
That’s a remarkable play, and it helped LSU prevent a possible Florida score. However, the Tigers went three-and-out on their next drive and punted, and the Gators got a field goal to make it 14-10; another three-and-out then led to a touchdown that made it a 17-14 Florida lead. But LSU then scored 10 points of their own to enter halftime with a 24-17 lead.
If LSU is able to hang on for the win, plays like this one will have been crucial. And even if they don’t get the victory here, they still produced one of the zaniest plays of 2020.
