The college transfer portal is heating up with some of the biggest names in college football looking for a new home, especially in the wake of so many coaches swapping spots and finding new jobs.
Spencer Rattler and Bo Nix are two big names already in the portal and now a particularly big name from the West Coast has entered the portal as well. It was reported on Monday that USC Trojans quarterback Kedon Slovis had entered the transfer portal.
The Phoenix-area native has been the starting quarterback for the Trojans for the past three seasons, taking over as a true freshman, playing the entire COVID-shortened 2020 season, and then starting nine games this past season before he was injured. Over the course of his USC career, he threw for 7,576 yards, 58 TDs, and 24 interceptions. Assuming he follows through and transfers, he leaves as No. 7 on the school’s passing yards list and tied for fifth on the touchdown list.
Slovis was getting challenged by true freshman Jaxson Dart, who saw significant playing time last season. The writing may have been on the wall that new head coach Lincoln Riley would want to look to the future rather than invest in Slovis next season.
Slovis initially chose USC over offers from Oregon State, NC State, Hawaii, SMU, and a few other schools. The three-star or four-star recruit, depending on the service, wasn’t highly recruited by many of the other programs who would probably love to have him call plays next year as a graduate transfer. Even better, Slovis still has two years of eligibility remaining.
We’ll have to see who emerges as the favorites for Slovis. If he’s looking to move closer to where he grew up, he might be competing directly with Spencer Rattler, who is also from Arizona and has been rumored to be in the mix at Arizona State.
In the meantime, the news certainly set off a lot of big discussions and reactions on social media on Monday.
We’ll see where Slovis lands as the college football landscape shifts during the offseason thanks to tons of coaching moves and players transfers.
